How to format your PC without losing active software licenses

Find out which codes to save and the steps to take before formatting your computer so you do not lose your software licenses.

Saving activation keys before formatting

Before starting any computer formatting procedure, you need to retrieve all the activation codes of the installed software. These license keys are usually found in the confirmation email received at the time of purchase or inside the personal area of the online shop where the order was placed. Save these codes on a USB flash drive or on a piece of paper.

Do not rely on the presence of the program on the hard drive, as formatting will erase all data. If you have purchased licenses for antivirus software, graphics programs, or work suites, the alphanumeric key is the only element that will allow you to reuse the service after the system restore.

Managing Windows and Office licenses

Regarding the Windows operating system, the situation is often automated. The most recent versions associate the license directly with the computer's internal components or with your personal account. By reinstalling the same version of Windows, the system will reactivate itself as soon as the computer connects to the internet, without requiring the manual entry of any code.

For Office suite programs, the procedure requires an extra step. When possible, it is best to open the program and disconnect your profile or uninstall the software before formatting. In this way, the servers will recognize that the license is no longer in use on that computer and will allow you to reactivate it easily after the new installation.

Antivirus and other protection programs

Antivirus and security software manage licenses based on the subscription duration and the number of allowed devices. If the license is still valid, formatting does not cause you to lose the remaining days. The validity period continues to run normally from the day of the first activation.

After formatting the computer and reinstalling the operating system, you simply need to download the protection program again. During installation or upon first launch, enter the same license key saved previously or log in with the credentials of your profile linked to the antivirus to reactivate protection.
