Guide to Autodesk licenses: how subscriptions, users, and activation work

The annual subscription model per user
The main design and graphics software from Autodesk, such as AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, and Maya, can no longer be purchased with a permanent license. Today, these programs use a subscription-based model, which is usually renewed on an annual basis. This means that access to the software is guaranteed for the entire duration of the paid period and requires a periodic renewal in order to continue working without interruption.
The fundamental characteristic of this system is that the license is strictly personal. You no longer purchase a code to install on a single physical machine, but you obtain a right of use linked to a single specific user. Each person who needs to use the program must therefore have their own assigned named license.
How the account and license assignment work
The core of the entire management system is the Autodesk account. When a license is purchased, it is loaded into an administrative control panel. From this portal, the company administrator or the owner of the purchase must associate the license with the email address of the person who will actually use the software.
The end user will receive a notification and must create or log into their personal Autodesk account using the same email address to which the license was assigned. Once this association is complete, the software is ready to be used. There is no need for complex activation codes or license files to copy onto the computer, as the system recognizes the user at the moment of login.
Installation and use on multiple computers
This management method offers great flexibility for those who work on different devices. Since the license is tied to the person and not to the computer, the user has the possibility to install the Autodesk software on multiple machines, for example, on the office computer, on the home computer, and on a laptop for business trips.
However, there is an important limit to ensure compliance with the terms of use. Even if the program is installed on multiple devices, the user can actively use it on only one computer at a time. Simultaneous use of the software on multiple machines with the same account is not allowed. Furthermore, the login credentials are strictly personal and cannot be shared with colleagues or collaborators.
What happens when the subscription expires
When the annual subscription reaches its natural expiration date, if the renewal is not carried out, the license ceases to be active. Upon the first launch of the software after expiration, the system will detect the lack of a valid subscription associated with the user's account.
In this situation, the program will no longer allow the creation of new projects or the modification of existing ones. Usually, Autodesk software switches to a view-only mode, which still allows files to be opened for viewing or printing. To resume normal design work and unlock all functions, it will be necessary to purchase a new subscription or renew the expired one, re-associating the license with the user's account.
