The difference between OEM and Retail
An OEM license is created to be used by computer manufacturers. When activated, it binds permanently to the motherboard of that specific computer. If you decide to change computers in the future, or if you replace fundamental hardware components, the OEM license cannot be reused and it will be necessary to purchase a new one.
The Retail license, on the contrary, is untethered from the single computer. This means it can be transferred from one device to another. What ESD means and how digital delivery works
The acronym ESD indicates the electronic software distribution. This is not a different type of license from those just described, but simply the delivery method. An ESD license is sent directly via email in the form of a digital code, along with the instructions to download the program from the manufacturer's official website.
The ESD license is identical in every way to the one that was once purchased inside a physical box in stores. Digital delivery does not take anything away from the legal validity or the functionality of the software. This system eliminates shipping times and the environmental impact of transport, offering immediate access to the product.
Which type is best to choose
The choice between the different options depends on your usage needs and the stability of the computer in use. The OEM license is suitable for those who own a recent computer that they do not intend to replace or modify for a long time. It is the typical choice for those who want to regularize a single device, keeping it active until the end of its life cycle.
The Retail license, on the other hand, is the best choice for those who frequently change computers or for those who like to upgrade their system components. Although it may require a different initial management, it offers the security of not losing the purchased software in the event of an irreparable computer failure. Finally, the ESD version is recommended for anyone who wishes to receive the software immediately, without waiting for the shipment of a physical package.
